Beatrice Ntuba to appear in person with her film Sisters in Law.
Q&A to follow the screening.
July 11, 2006.
The Mary Sidney Society presents, from Cameroon, Beatrice Ntuba in person with her film SISTERS IN LAW. Winner of the Prix de Essai at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and described as “one of the best documentaries of all time” by the Telluride Film Festival, the film offers a fascinating, inspiring, and often hilarious look at the daily work of a small courthouse in Cameroon where two tough-minded women—prosecutor Vera Ngassa (above, left) and Court President Beatrice Ntuba (above, right)—have taken charge in a historic coup.
In SISTERS IN LAW, directed by Kim Loginotto and Florence Ayisi, the two female judges try Cameroon’s first domestic trials, finally inserting a gender-neutral sense of law and order into their town. This documentary records the process of the first conviction of spousal abuse.
Insightful and compassionate, SISTERS IN LAW presents a rare strong and positive view of African women—truly capturing an emerging spirit of courage, hope, and the possibility of change.
The Mary Sidney Society will host a private benefit dinner with Beatrice Ntuba before the film. Please see the details below.
